The institute is presently being established to provide ongoing observations of the atmospheric composition in support of the NDACC and GCOS programmes including the validation of environmental satellites and the analysis and interpretation of satellite imagery for applications such as land use change.

We are participating in the COCCON network, which stands for COllaborative Carbon Column Observing Network. Column-averaged abundances of carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor are deduced from the recorded solar absorption spectra.

Environmental Satellite Observations

We can derive annual land-use change maps e.g. for the detection of illegal logging. A pilot study with the CVC is planned to detect illegal crop growth in partially cleared forests (non-closed canopy).


High resolution solar FTIR spectrometer

The solar high-resolution Bruker 120M infra-red FT spectrometer is an extremely versatile instrument that provides both integrated total column amounts of some 35 atmospheric molecular constituents as well their respective vertical distributions and their isotopic ratios.
